About Hydraulic Pictures
Founded by Bill Streeter, Hydraulic Pictures makes documentary films and event video in St. Louis.
I’m Bill Streeter, founder of Hydraulic Pictures. For more than 25 years, I’ve filmed inside city offices, foundations, public events, backstage spaces, and working institutions. My job is to understand the room quickly, move quietly, and capture what matters without changing what happens. My work includes the feature documentary Brick by Chance and Fortune, media for the BBC, NPR, and PBS, and institutional and cultural projects under the Hydraulic Pictures name since 2013.
That way of working came from experience inside real places, with real work going on around the camera.
Earned access
Access comes from knowing how to work in someone else’s space.
People trust us to film without getting in the way.
That trust has allowed me to film in places that aren’t open to larger crews.
The work has taken me from the Mayor’s office to the locker rooms at Energizer Park, and into civic and cultural spaces across St. Louis.
How this work is different
I pay attention to how the room is working before I decide where the camera belongs.
I film with a small footprint and stay responsive as events unfold.
That means:
- reading situations in real time
- knowing when not to shoot
- understanding which moments matter and which don’t
The finished film reflects what happened, not a performance staged for the camera.
Cultural context matters
Much of our work happens in St. Louis, but the stories are made for the audiences our clients need to reach.
We learn the context before filming and make room for people to act naturally, whether the audience is local or national.
Scope and capacity
Hydraulic Pictures is a small production company.
I stay directly involved in every project and bring in trusted collaborators when the scope calls for them.
